About Prometheus Books
Provocative, progressive and independent, Prometheus Books is committed to testing the boundaries of established thought and providing readers with thoughtful and authoritative books in a wide variety of categories.
Publishing intelligent nonfiction for the thoughtful lay reader, Prometheus Books is a leading publisher of the areas of popular science, philosophy, atheism, humanism, and critical thinking. Prometheus Books also publishes books in social science, current events, true crime, history, Islamic studies, religion, psychology, health and medicine, self-help, and other categories, as well as established classics in literature, philosophy, and the sciences.
Taking its name from the courageous Greek god who gave fire to humans—lighting the way to reason, intelligence, and independence—Prometheus Books was founded in 1969 by philosopher Paul Kurtz and is headquartered in Amherst, New York.
In addition to its core nonfiction line, Prometheus Books publishes under three additional imprints:
PYR®, launched in March 2005, publishes quality science fiction and fantasy. With an almost instant reputation for quality and innovation, Pyr quickly earned acclaim, awards, and loyal fans, including Pulitzer Prize–winning author Junot Díaz, who called Pyr “the imprint to beat in the science fiction and fantasy fields.” Under the oversight of award-winning editorial director Lou Anders, this popular boutique brand boasts many commercial and critical successes.
SEVENTH STREET BOOKS®, launched in October 2012, is devoted to publishing quality crime fiction regardless of subgenre. From puzzling mystery to psychological suspense, from hardboiled noir to legal thriller, the Seventh Street Books line includes both veteran and debut authors. The imprint has developed several favorite ongoing series (such as the novels of Hugo Marston, Samuel Craddock, Mark Angelotti, and Detective Sean Duffy) and continues to discover and nurture exciting new talent, such as authors Lori Rader-Day (The Black Hour), Mark Pryor (The Button Man), and Allen Eskens (The Life We Bury).
HUMANITY BOOKS, acquired in 1998, publishes academic works of high quality across a wide spectrum of the humanities. Designed for scholars, students, and the educated public, it is committed to presenting cutting-edge research in philosophy (both analytic and continental philosophy); the history of philosophy; sociology; history; the history of science; political science; race, ethnicity, and gender studies; and classic works in Black Studies and Women's Studies, among other disciplines.
Prometheus Books is sold and distributed worldwide by Penguin Random House and publishes both print and ebooks. Prometheus Books titles have been translated into more than 50 different languages.
